University Teachers Blast FG Over Insecurity
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, says the federal government must accept responsibility for the failure to manage crisis in the country, leading to the killings of several persons.
ASUU
at a briefing in Abuja said while members of the union, like millions
of other patriotic Nigerians watched helplessly the endless drift that
has characterized governance since the return to civil rule in 1999, it
is high time the government act.
According to ASUU president, Professor
Biodun Ogunyemi, Nigerians had hoped for socio-economic opportunities
that would improve their deplorable conditions but these hopes have been
dashed and that the hope for any meaningful change in the near future
appears bleak each passing day.
On farmers/herdsmen conflicts, ASUU said
government’s handling of the issue has fallen far short of protecting
certain constitutional Provisions on fundamental human rights, just as
it particularly accused government of failure to enforce section 17 :2b
of the Nigerian constitution which states that the sanctity of the
human person shall be recognized and human dignity shall be maintained
and enhanced.
The university lecturers also condemned
in strong terms, those hiding behind the farmers and pastoralists to
incite the poor to mutual destruction and called on the government to
deal with all those who are established to have sponsored or committed
such heinous crimes against fellow citizens.
