My Administration Is Determined To Break Away From Previous Governments’ Practice – Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari says his administration is determined to break away from the practice by previous governments, which commit Nigeria to treaties without a definite implementation plan to actualize the expected benefits of such agreements.
Speaking on Monday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja while inaugurating a Presidential Technical Committee to assess the impact and Nigeria's readiness for the Africa continental free trade area agreement, the President said that Nigeria cannot go back to the days of signing agreements without understanding and planning for the consequences of such action.
Describing the creation of a free trade area in Africa as a worthy and commendable idea, President Buhari noted that Nigeria's vision for intra African trade is for the free movement of made in Africa goods, stressing that the continental free trade area must be tailored along the vision so that Africans can reap its full benefits. The President, who maintained that Nigeria is the largest economy in Africa, lamented the inability of the country to utilise its production capacities for industrialisation, a gap which he said, is being addressed with the gradual implementation of the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, ERGP.
Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Okechukwu Enelama, said that the setting up of the committee followed a nationwide consultation with key partners on why Nigeria should endorse the Africa continental free trade area agreement.
The Presidential committee has 12 weeks to conclude its assignment.
