Nigeria Needs Over One Trillion Naira To Address Ecological Problems
Nigeria needs over 1trillion naira to address all the ecological problems in the country as it contends with increasing demands from communities affected by erosion, flood and pollution
Permanent
secretary at the ecological fund office, Habiba Lawal, who made this
known at a forum in Abuja however said 45 out of 88 projects centred
around these key areas have been completed since 2015.
Despite commissioning several projects
across the country, the ecological fund office comes under frequent
scrutiny and criticism by Nigerians and only recently, the national
assembly accused the federal and state government of diverting over 500
billion Naira ecological fund in 15 years.
Permanent secretary of the ecological
fund office, Habiba Lawal however says she is not aware of these
diversions and not in the position to take punitive measures against
anyone.
A break down of the ecological funds
indicates that of the two point three two percent, states and local
governments take one point three two percent while the national
emergency management agency takes a percentage of the federal
government’s share but the management of the funds remains highly
contentions.
The permanent secretary regreted that most of the completed projects are usually vandalised or turned to dump sites.
